So this is what it feels like? Damn you van Persie!!

Ok, so I don't mean to curse Robin's magnificent strike in the 99.99999th minute of this afternoon's match (my time here in the US), but COME ON Everton, you can't squander 3 points like that!

Had I known that choosing a side would cause me this much heartache so soon, I would have rethought my new found allegiance to the Toffees.

Tim Cahill was superb yet again and put the Blues up in the 61st against Arsenal with a now almost trade markable perfect form header; but alas, Arsene Wenger's boys would not be denied the point and who else would you expect to snatch three points away from any team but the sublime Robin van Persie.

The bitter taste of points lost may only be washed away by another small glass of Makers Mark. I'll let you know in the morning how that works out for me.

Meanwhile, we'll hope the boys heal up in time for Manchester United on Saturday.

Marouane Fellaini returns for Everton against Arsenal Today

Just cruising through one of my new favorite internet haunts, EvertonFC.com, ahead of today's number 5 v. number 6 match with Arsenal, and picked up some good news from evertonTV.

Fellaini returns from a 2 match suspension just in time for a tough battle against an Arsenal that is slowly regaining form.

According to the interview, Fellaini said,
"We're going to try and keep the run going. The main thing is to try to get those three points. We're at home, we've got the crowd supporting us and that will certainly help us.

"You have to remember Arsenal have a slightly more experienced squad than us, certainly a bigger squad than us and lots of internationals as well, but hopefully we'll match them."

Not exactly words ringing with confidence, but let's hope the Toffees remember they are still very close to Champions League contention.

Kick off is at 3:00PM Eastern!

Something strange happened this last Sunday

Something quite strange happened to me on Sunday.

I was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking my coffee and enjoying an intense FA Cup derby between Everton FC and Liverpool FC when all of sudden, quite inexplicably, my heart began to warm toward those royal blue shirts.

I don’t know what it was or when it happened exactly.

Maybe it was seeing American Tim Howard in the goal that warmed my connection with the team. But there are other Americans in the Premiership - last season Fulham was loaded with American talent, so I don't think that alone was it.

Perhaps it was seeing Australian aerial maestro Tim Cahill’s header and Joleon Lescott’s redirection of the header in to the net to send Everton up 1-0 at Anfield. Cahill contributes gritty performances and game winning goals time and again and as a former footballing ex-pat in Australia, I follow the careers of Sydneysiders like Cahill pretty closely...but still, not enough.

Or maybe it was just something in Everton’s defensive work ethic, led by Phil Jagielka and Phil Neville, weathering barrage after barrage until Liverpool's playmaker (and current troublemaker) Steven Gerrard slotted home the equalizer, but I don’t think that defensive performances are what tipped the scale.

For a bit of history, I’ve always liked Manchester United, but I’ve never really felt close to them. It's a bit of a cliché to say that you follow Manchester United - they are after all the world's most valuable sports franchise. But I don’t own any of their game kits, I don’t have posters of Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo in my room (I’m married and in my late 30’s, so that would just be weird anyway), and I don’t obsess over their performances (although I am a pretty big Ryan Giggs fan).

As a connoisseur of fine football, I think I’ve enjoyed Man Utd. as much for their skill at winning as anything else. Much like I enjoy watching Barcelona or AC Milan play.

But being American, I’ve never really held an allegiance to an English club. And frankly, I’ve been a bit jealous.

I’ve read Fever Pitch and while I understand where Nick Hornby is coming from, I’ve never felt that sense of belonging to a cause. Sure it’s easy to saddle up to perennial powerhouse clubs like Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, or Chelsea; they are winners. They have deep pockets. They have global superstars. Pick any one of these four as “your” club and chances are you’ll have bragging rights for something – FA Cup, Champions League, Premiership...something...all of them maybe, and yet, I still felt no connection.

My grandmother was from England. She was born and raised in a small town I’ve never been to called St. Helens. So this past Sunday, while watching Liverpool and Everton battle it out and feeling suddenly a bit angry at the sight of all of that Liverpool Red (and Liverpool $green) out on the pitch against that other side of everymen in royal blue, I fired up Google maps.

To my surprise, my grandmother’s childhood home was a mere 9 miles drive from Goodison Park (Anfield is a couple miles further)! I wonder then, did her family follow Everton? Did my great great uncle Ron dream of playing for The People's Club? Is there something in my genetic code which made me lean toward Everton on Sunday?

However mysterious the reason, I have decided to dip my toe in the water of choosing sides in English Premiership football. I have finally shaken off the cliché. I will watch and enjoy fine football as always, but I will now call myself an Everton supporter and an unofficial member of the School of Science.

“it’s a grand old team”

USA vs. Sweden Highlights

For my money, Brian Ching's over the shoulder trap and pass to set up Sacha's 3rd goal was absolute brilliance. Enjoy (while it lasts):

Watch the US Men's National Team play Sweden - the first half was the Sacha Kljestan show...now watching the second half as we're up 2-0.

23 January 2009

The US Men’s NÃ¥tiönal TeÃ¥m is set tö tÃ¥ke ön Sweden SÃ¥turdÃ¥y night

In the first friendly of 2009 for both the United States and Sweden, the US Men's National team will take a side light on European based players in to the match against Sweden at the Home Depot Center.

The vast majority of the 22 man camp that Coach Bob Bradley is looking at is made up of all MLS players save four.

The final roster will be cut down to 18 men, but Coach Bradley will have his pick from the following:

GOALKEEPERS: Jon Busch (Chicago Fire), Will Hesmer (Columbus Crew), Troy Perkins (Valerenga IF), Matt Pickens (Colorado Rapids)

DEFENDERS: Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Danny Califf (FC Midtjylland), Ugo Ihemelu (Colorado Rapids), Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjælland), Chris Wingert (Real Salt Lake), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC)

MIDFIELDERS: Brian Carroll (Columbus Crew), Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Eddie Gaven (Columbus Crew), Stuart Holden (Houston Dynamo), Jack Jewsbury (Kansas City Wizards), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew), John Thorrington (Chicago Fire)

FORWARDS: Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Kenny Cooper (FC Dallas), Charlie Davies (Hammarby IF), Chris Rolfe (Chicago Fire)

It's a very similar story for the Swedish side that is traveling half way around the world to tune up against the USA on the 24th and then against Mexico in Oakland on the 28th. Most of their European based superstars were not released by their club teams, many in the height of their respective races to the top of the table.

Nonetheless, both sides have players that are desperately trying to earn some staying power for their national team sides, so while the match may not be replete with brilliance, it will surely be full of heart.

Today is decision day for Celtic - does Sacha Kljestan don green or not?

Sacha Kljestan, the lanky Chivas USA midfielder and occasional US Men's National team starter, has wrapped up his trial with Glasgow Celtic and is back in the US Men's National team training camp...and we'll find out soon enough if his play this week impressed Gordon Strachan enough to earn a spot on the SPL's leaders' roster.

I think the move would be great experience for Sacha. He's always demonstrated excellent vision and skill, the piece of his game that is lacking in my mind, is his speed of decision making.

While the general talent level of the SPL may not be dramatically different than the MLS, certainly the match day pressures of playing at Celtic park alongside former Champions League contenders, should hone his game quite nicely.

ESPN to show Mexico vs. USA in High Def

The Match is set. USA vs. Mexico.

The Date is set. Feruary 11th.

And now the High Definition is set. That's right folks, ESPN announced that the match will be broadcast on ESPN2 in High Definition as part of their "Rivalry Week" promotion - usually reserved for college basketball...the network has slowly begun to recognize the rising tide of television popularity for the world's game in the United States.

It's no secret that there is no such thing as US v. Mexico friendly, but this match kicks off the next round of World Cup qualifying for both of these nations, so there will be nothing left behind. And for fans of the USMNT, you know when we play Mexico in the states, there will be no shortage of green shirts in the stands!

Complete match information is here courtesy of USsoccer.com:

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
U.S. Men’s National Team vs. Mexico / 7 p.m. ET — 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualifier

TICKETS GO ON SALE STARTING Wednesday, January 28, 12 p.m. ET. LIMIT 4 TICKETS PER PURCHASE.

By the way my fellow Atlantans, at a mere 550 miles away, Columbus Crew stadium is our closest MLS venue, so it may be well worth the road trip (if you can get a ticket!)

Parrots have a sense of humor

It would appear that a bird, a parrot to be exact, was having some fun by imitating the referee's whistle during a match.

What the parrot surely did not realize was that it was a seven goal shoot-out between Hatfield Town and Hertford Heath in which every call could have tipped the balance.

Accorinding to an article in the Telegraph the bird (and its owner) had to be banished from the football ground by the referee.

The article goes on to quote referee Gary Bailey, who it would appear, also has a pretty good sense of humor,

"I've never known anything like it in my football career. It was a big game and there were quite a lot of people there. This woman was standing right by the touchline and suddenly unveiled a big cage with this big green parrot in it. I didn't mind at first. But then every time I blew my whistle the bird made exactly the same sound. The players all stopped so I had to ask her to move the parrot. It was bizarre. The crowd were all laughing. Looking back I should have made far more of it and got out my red card to show to the parrot."

Clint Dempsey featured in The Observer

America's own wunderkind of World Cup 2006 - who then sort of hit the skids for his club side in 2007-08 - seems to have found his footing yet again.

Clint Dempsey is once again the light in Roy Hodgson's eye at Craven Cottage and is delivering the goods in this season of English Premiership Football.

According to the article published in The Observer, Clint can pin his boost in confidence to a single equalizing goal against Portsmouth in October,

"It got the confidence going and I tried to push on from there," he says. "I had a good game against Newcastle a little later – that got me into the starting line‑up and I haven't looked back.

"The team's playing well and it feels good to be part of it. The two previous seasons I've been here have been relegation battles. Roy has got us all on the same page – the team we have now likes to play their football, pass the ball."

Now Fulham, thanks in large measure to Dempsey's form, are no longer scraping for points at the bottom of the table, but are sitting comfortably in the middle and looking to climb.

Kennesaw State Buys Land for Soccer Expansion

According to an article in today's AJC, Kennesaw State University wrapped up the acquisition of 88 acres across the street from the University's main entrance.

Why is this news for Gruff readers? Because they plan to build seven soccer fields and a 2500 seat - pushing up to 7500 - soccer stadium!

Dan Chapman of the AJC reports that
"within the last year, the KSU Foundation has cobbled together 88 acres between I-75 and I-575 and below Chastain Road. At least seven soccer-sized athletic fields will be laid out along with a track and restrooms.

A jogging trail will encircle a 10-acre lake. Intramural and club teams, including lacrosse, rugby and flag football, will also use the fields."

KSU has a very strong girls program who went 11-4-5 last season, losing a semi final shootout to Belmont in the NCAA Division One Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.

This type of real estate dedicated to soccer is sure to give the already well regarded program an even bigger boost!

DVD Review - History of the MLS Cup

Awesome DVD - period. I've got to admit, I really didn't know what to expect when I popped History of the MLS Cup in to the old DVD player.

Frankly, the MLS Cup is a match that barely registers on the radar down here in Atlanta, so it's typically only the die hard fans, such as yours truly, who tune in to the match with conviction.

I already own "Game Breakers: The Stars of Major League Soccer" - a video with a rockin' soundtrack, some really good interviews, and excellent highlights - so I figured MLS had set the bar fairly high for their DVD productions, and with History of the MLS Cup, I was not disappointed.

They video tracks the cup from the absolute monsoon that was the 1st MLS Cup in 1996 through to 2007's Dynomic Dwayne De Rosario's second half header to deliver back to backs for Houston.

Impressive locker room footage, great camera angles of all the major goals and fantastic game winning saves (I'm looking at you Tony Meola and Pat Olmstead), make this one a must have for any American soccer fan's collection.

Thumbs up from me.

Where are America's Soccer Academies?

I was reading up on the New York Times Soccer Blog a day or two ago, when we were discussing Marcus Tracy’s signing with Aalborg Boldspilklub, and I think it’s time to articulate a key difference with American soccer and soccer in the rest of the world.

The thing is, Tracy is already 22 years old and he's just now getting professional touches on the ball.

So this fact got me thinking again about how professional athletes in America are cultivated and discovered. I was complaining that the "NCAA to MLS combine" model doesn't make a whole lot of sense for soccer.

But the problem really goes back further than NCAA draft picks and combines.

It goes back to our high school aged kids and how they are groomed for their next steps.

When you consider a guy like Ryan Giggs was playing at Manchester United’s academy when he was 14, while most of our 14 year olds are high school Freshman - getting 3 hours a week on the ball if they’re lucky, you begin to get a more complete picture of how our system of sports promotion is stacked against us.

The major sports clubs all over Europe have serious Academies, so that talented kids, such as Giggs, can hone their craft in an environment surrounded by other talented kids pretty much there for the same reason. They are competing against each other, learning from each other, and taking classroom instruction in sports related subjects that will benefit them as professionals.

So while our top 17 year old high school prospects are hoping for a "full ride" to a division one university, Ryan Giggs as a 17 year old was making his English Premier League debut against Everton at Old Trafford in front of tens of thousands of Red Devil faithfuls.

That being said, what is the appetite for American families to pull their kids out of “regular” school and put them in a soccer academy? People with kids committed to gymnastics or tennis or even acting, hire tutors and home school…I could imagine a fully academically accredited soccer academy might do ok if there were a some serious pathways to success.

Is it time to start Gruffgoat FC?

Sorry Atlanta, Aruthur Blank Withdraws his bid for an MLS Expansion Team

Blame it on the State budget, blame it on the overall economy, blame it something...but no matter where the blame is placed - Atlanta, and indeed the entire Southern US, will remain without an MLS franchise for the foreseeable future.

In an statement issued by Kim Shreckengost, executive vice president at the AMB Group LLC and Arthur Blank’s chief of staff said:

"In mid-October, AMB Group submitted its bid application to own and operate a Major League Soccer team in metro Atlanta. We recently informed MLS officials that we will not be ready to field a team in the 2011 season, which is the season currently under review for two expansion teams, primarily because we didn't feel we would be able to complete a public/private partnership arrangement in the timeframe necessary to build a soccer stadium by 2011."

Read the complete article at the Atlanta Business Chronicle here.

So Atlanta soccer fans hoping for an MLS franchise will have to once again wait...and wait...and wait.

The Cobb Amatuer Soccer League - Winter Season post match report for Ohana Kekoas O-35

I promised a post match report for those interested so here it goes:

The weather at Lost Mountain Park was cold as expected, but not the mind numbing cold I was bracing for. Shorts were actually just fine after warm-up and with a beanie and gloves, the weather was not a problem.

As for the match itself - we won pretty easily actually. I'm not sure what the final score was - it's a winter tune up league anyway, so score is not that big a deal - but we slotted in at least 6 on the small sided goals.

In addition, we are sans our regular keeper Danny, so team captain Todd, doing what captains do, stepped up to mind the nets for the first 40. We divided goal keeping duties among four of us the second half so for those keeping score, Jeff, Kevin, TJ and yours truly rounded it out.

The thing that did surprise me about this league is that it's two 40-minutes halves! At seven players per side, that’s a pretty decent amount of running.

Not to mention, we only had eight show up – meaning one sub – so needless to say, yours truly will most likely be pretty sore tomorrow! On a cold day like this, I'd rather be moving on the pitch - albeit slowly - than standing on the sides.

Early on we played some really nice soccer considering the winter rust build up; a lot of ball movement, nice one touch passing, good scoring opportunities and solid defense. We were up by 3 at half time and scored at least a couple of more in the second – but with quickly wearying legs toward the 65 minute mark, we let one slip past us to keep from getting the clean sheet and Witch Doctors did a nice job of keeping the pressure on until the final whistle.

Let’s hope the weather holds out for next weekend and maybe is even a bit warmer…the 40s would be nice!

English football Saturday - Official discussion thread

The EPL has a full set of matches lined up for us on this chilly Saturday morning...and in the event my fellow farkers do not get a timely discussion thread, Gruffgoat's Soccer Forum while still a bit of a ghost town, is open for business.

Right now in Atlanta, Georgia the temperature is a chilly 10 degrees Fahrenheit...so make yourself a nice pot of coffee and settle in for the matches:

Saturday, 17 January 2009

Blackburn v Newcastle, 10:00 am EST.
Bolton v Man Utd, 10:00 am EST.
Chelsea v Stoke, 10:00 am EST.
Man City v Wigan, 10:00 am EST.
Sunderland v Aston Villa, 10:00 am EST.
West Brom v Middlesbrough, 10:00 am EST.

The late match is Hull v Arsenal, kicking off at Noon EST.

I've got a match at 1:00PM EST so I'll miss Hull v. Arsenal but will be looking forward to catching up on the comments.

ADASL’s Perrin Cup Quarter Final Round is Taking Shape

The ADASL is one of Georgia’s top amateur leagues and the argument can be made that it is in fact the highest level of competition available to amateurs in the state.

The league has an excellent annual single elimination tournament that runs the length of the season called the Perrin Cup.

Now with the preliminary rounds, the round of 32, and the round of 16 out of the way, the drama that is the quarter finals, with the exception of one remaining bracket, is scheduled to be played out on February 15th.

The matches scheduled are:

First Division leaders Melchester Wings vs. Third Division upstarts Creswell FC

First Division Dasani vs. First Division Sting Gold (my former club – good luck guys)

First Division AC Silverbacks vs. First Division FC Ljiljan

With the last bracket still in limbo between Neusoft, Screaming Pelicans, Real Pish, and B&H International

I'll be tracking this tournament so stay tuned for updates.

Update from Atlanta Women's Professional Soccer

I just popped open my email Inbox to find an update from Georgia Soccer that may be of interest to friends and fans alike. I've redacted the fundraising bits for the general public, but if you're interested, visit the homepage at www.atlantawomensprosoccer.com/ for all of the details.

It is an exciting time to be a soccer fan! Last month, we kicked off our season ticket pledge drive and are working hard to bring a Women's Professional Soccer team to Atlanta in 2010. In just a few months, on March 29, the Los Angeles Sol and the Washington Freedom will start the league's inaugural season in Los Angeles with Marta Vieira de Silva and Abby Wambach leading their teams in a special opening game.

...

We are preparing to launch a "name the team" contest at the Georgia Soccer Annual General Meeting on January 31 and plan to announce a name for our team at the beginning of the WPS Inaugural 2009 season! Stay tuned for more details about how you can vote on a team name. We are continuing to explore several stadium options and will keep you posted on our progress and news.

I too will try and keep you guys and gals updated as more details emerge.

Metro Atlanta Weather Forecast for Saturday's Sub-Arctic Classic - COLD

The Sub-Arctic Classic is rescheduled for this Saturday at 1:00PM EST as Ohana FC Kekoas take on the Witch Doctors.

Actually it's just the first match or our Cobb Amateur Soccer League winter 7-aside series, but I'm allowed some delusions of grandeur right? The Ohana FC Kekoas is the over 35 team I joined with last fall after taking about seven years off of playing - and by the way, as I've posted before, my hamstrings have never forgiven me.

So as of right now, the Weather channel is forecasting our match day weather as sunny and in the 30sF.

That may not sound too bad for you guys dialing in from the frozen Tundra that is the vast majority of the US right now, but for me...it's going to be a bit on the chilly side.

I'll be sure to post a post-match report for the hundreds...ok, dozens...ok, fan.

FTLOTG.

Top Prospect Disses the "Combine"

The New York Times Soccer Blog is reporting today that Wake Forest stand out Marcus Tracy has signed with Aalborg Boldspilklub, defending champions of the Danish Superliga and current Champions League contenders.

According to the Times Blog, he was considered a super hot prospect ahead of today's MLS combine, but opted out to play his football in Europe.

This whole "combine" thing has really got me thinking, do we (meaning Americans) go through the motions of the "draft" and "combine" simply because that's how American football does it?

I mean, would Tracy have not been seriously better off playing at at Aalborg Boldspilklub's academy over the last four years? This is a club in the Champions League after all and will be facing stiff Group E competition from Manchester United, Villarreal, and Celtic.

I don't know - I just feel like we - the United States - are doomed to be second best as a nation, in spite of our considerable resources and talent, unless we get our star talent mixing with other start talent much much sooner than aged 22...Marcus' age as of signing. Thoughts?

And the Winner Is…Manchester United!

Man U is no stranger to hearing those words, but this competition takes place on the balance sheet and not on the pitch.

That’s right, Forbes has just released their annual list of the world’s most valuable sports franchises and at the top of the list is a proper football club, Manchester United.

Unfortunately, the list is in that abomination of the internet known as a picture slide show – so I’ve done you the courtesy of reprinting the top 10 here for you.

1. Manchester United
2. Dallas Cowboys
3. Washington Redskins
4. New England Patriots
5. New York Yankees
6. Real Madrid
7. Arsenal
8. New York Giants
9. New York Jets
10. Houston Texans

There can be no question that as a single sports league, the NFL of American Football has no competition when it comes to making money!

I’ve said this before, NFL Football is a “perfect storm” of marketing, television, and pageantry and there is not a better suited sport in the world to feed the fancy of the typical indolent American than this.

I’m trying to be nice, but just have a look at the picture Forbes picked to show off the Houston Texans if you want a chuckle…these guys aren’t backing away from the buffet line any time soon!

Photobucket

But I digress...anyway, enjoy the list.

Strange News from Down Under

I picked this Sydney Morning Herald story up via Fark.com and thought it was odd enough to re-tell here.

Basically, Sydney FC’s Robbie Middleby was attacked by a couple of jealous fans in the parking lot after a match. What were his fans jealous of you may ask? He was leaving them! He had just announced his intent to transfer to the year round summer of North Queensland and play for the Fury.

Middleby is quoted in SMH as saying, "I was just walking along, and then I hear a guy saying 'You're f--king leaving us are you Middleby? He must have jumped out from behind a car. His mate just stood there, and he kneed me and starting throwing punches. I tried to back off, but then my wife - who was waiting at the car but saw what was happening - came running over saying 'leave him alone'. The guy turned towards her, and I thought he was going to attack her, so I threw a punch or two, and then my mate, who was also at the car, came over as well. That's when the two of them ran off."

From my time in Australia, I knew that soccer was growing in popularity by leaps and bounds, largely catalyzed
By Australia’s impressive showing in World Cup 2006, but I didn’t realize they had fans going full hooligan!

EPSN, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PUT THE MATCH ON!!! - Revisited

Right now I'm watching some stupid baseball game that doesn't matter to anyone while the United States is trying to qualify for the World Cup!!!! ESPN, why do you hate me so much? For the love of all that is holy, please turn off this boring mid season baseball crap and put the match on!!! please!

I was just rereading this vent/post from that slug-fest of a US qualifying match against Guatemala, in front of 26,000 crazed Guatemalans at the Estadio Nacional Mateo Flores in Guatemala City back in August and couldn't help but chuckle...I was apoplectic at the time.

Fortunately I was able to stream a Spanish language version of the match until the baseball game finally concluded well in to the first half. But re-reading this did get me thinking. What does the "game precedence" algorithm look like for ESPN?

Is it strictly a matter of "first on first finished" no matter what's in the queue?

I realize the vast majority of consuming "American" sports fans don't rank soccer very highly on their respective lists...but I would hope that the powers that be, as we get closer to some real World Cup qualifying (no offense to any of the other Group 1 nations...it's just that now it's really starting to take shape) that patriotism might tilt the soccer numbers in that magic algorithm in our favor.

Here's hoping.

A full plate of hump day football on tap for you

It’s a non Champions League Wednesday and yet there are quite a few quality matches in the queue for today.

First, in my second favorite league in the world, there are two King’s Cup matches today. For those of you who don’t know, the Copa del Rey is sort of an FA Cup style tournament that’s been around since 1902.

At 2:00pm est., it’s Valencia v Racing
At 4:00pm est., it’s Barcelona v Atletico Madrid

And now for my favorite league in the world, there is a mixed bag of English football:

At 2:45pm est, Hull take on Newcastle in an FA Cup 3rd round replay to see who will move on to the last 32.
The other FA Cup match today is between Chelsea and Southend United, kick off on that one is at 3:00pm est.

And finally, in regular league action, it’s Manchester United v. Wigan also kicking off at 3:00pm est..

For those interested in discussing real time, your official Match Day discussion threads are waiting to be started over in the forums.

Georgia High School Boys AAAAA Top 15 pre-season rankings are out - Correction

So apparently I jumped the gun on these by a few weeks...the list I posted below is actually the final 2008 rankings from May 19, 2008...and the actual rankings aren't due out for a couple of more weeks. I'll be sure to post the pre-season rankings as soon as they come out.

Georgia High School Boys AAAAA Top 15 pre-season rankings are NOT out - corrected headline

CORRECTION - Original Post Below

For all of you Georgia high school soccer fans, the first set of rankings have been posted out on eurosportscoreboard.com.

Based on my background post from yesterday, I'd really be interested to know what clubs the majority of the players are coming from in each of these schools. Does anyone have that kind of data? There's a thread over in the forum for those who want to discuss in detail.

My guesses are alongside the list, but they are only guesses...I have no idea on some of these.

1 Walton - NASA: Metro North / Concorde
2 Collins Hill - GSA
3 Brookwood - GSA
4 East Coweta - Coweta County Soccer Association
5 Chattahoochee - Concorde
6 Harrison - Cobb FC / NASA
7 Centennial - Roswell Santos
8 Parkview - GSA
9 Houston Co - I have no idea
10 Warner Robins - I have no idea
11 North Cobb - Kennesaw FC / Cobb FC
12 Peachtree Ridge - GSA
13 S Forsyth - Atlanta Soccer Academy
14 Paulding Co - West Metro / Cobb FC
15 Camden County - I have no idea

What exactly is a "World Player of the Year" anyway?

By now you know, with little suprise, the Cristiano Ronaldo, the wunderkind of Portugal and Manchester United, has won the lastest round of "World Player of the Year."

Full congrats to Ronaldo, he is a phenomenal contributor no doubt, but I'm not sure I really understand this "award."

No doubt Ronaldo is an incredible player, but who on the pitch does not play a roll in their side's victory? How is this thing tabulated?

This award would seem to be based as much on a player's flamboyance as it is his impact.

A quick scan of the winners of this relatively new award shows me that no goalkeepers have been selected, no holding midfielders, no role players. And in fact, only two defenders (both legendary center backs: Cannavaro and Matthäus) have pulled down this hardware...I don't know, I'm just not feeling it.

You guys let me know if I'm off base on this one. Please feel free to continue discussing in further detail over at the Forum.

Georgia High School AAAAA Preview - First Predictions of the Season Courtesy of GSF

Here's a reprint of some very insightful analysis by Gwinnett Soccer Fan on this year's Georgia High School AAAAA Boys predictions. I gleaned from a somewhat infamous forum out at www.network54.com.

Gwinnett Soccer Fan, please contact me if I need to take this down, but I wanted to give your analysis some more coverage and put it out as a good starting point for folks to bring their own opinions to the table.

Again, full props to GSF, reprinted in its entirety:

#1 - Collins Hill ... at least eight or nine returning starters from last season's state runner-up finish ... strong team but will there be chemistry?

#2 - Chattahoochee ... Coach Meenan has really been building a great program the four or five seasons and these guys play CHHS in the first region game of the year ... all the marbles early??

#3 - Walton ... although they lost all of their top stars to D-1 soccer, they will still be a strong team because of Coach Boozer ... Raiders win 6-AAAAA.

#4 - Harrison ... I know many of you out there don't think much of Coach Gross but he has also built a solid program in Cobb County ... look for the Hoyas to win 5-AAAAA and seriously compete for the title.

#5 - Parkview ... they have their terrific striker (KG) coming back and one of the best keepers in Gwinnett County ... they have a solid coach (Tolmich) and have back-to-back 8-AAAAA titles ... only problem has been that they haven't made it past the 2nd round since since the 2005 title season.

#6 - East Coweta ... I know many of you will laugh at this because you are thinking "ECHS, are you crazy?" They return their most of their starters with the exception of their keeper and they should breeze into the quarter-finals before meeting a tough Atlanta-area team. Can they repeat and make it to the Final Four? I think they can.

#7 - Norcross ... The Blue Devils were young the last two seasons and did well in the playoffs despite their youth ... this season they have a great nucleus of solid players and will compete well with Collins Hill and the Hooch ... look for Norcross to be the "sleeper pick" this season.

#8 - Peachtree Ridge ... they won 7-AAAAA last season but were upended in the playoffs by a very good Brookwood team last season ... the Lions will be a solid team but all of 7-AAAAA is good. It would not surprise me to see 7-AAAAA sweep 8-AAAAA in the first round of the playoffs this year.

#9 - Centennial ... they had a great run last season beating Parkview and making it to the quarter-finals before losing to East Coweta ... although they lost some key players, they will be very competitive.

#10 TIE (Brookwood and Northview) ... Brookwood lost nine seniors from last year's team and is in complete rebuilding mode this season and lacking a goalkeeper ... they have a good coach and solid rising JV players but I don't know if they can get past the 1st round of the playoffs ... Northview was really young last season and lost to Brookwood in the 1st round of the playoffs ... EC and SD are terrific goal scorers for the Titans and they will have to beat either CHHS, PRHS, Hooch, or Norcross if they want to make the playoffs.

Honorable Mention:

North Cobb (5-AAAAA)
South Forsyth (7-AAAAA)
Kennesaw Mtn (5-AAAAA)
Central Gwinnett (8-AAAAA)
Camden County (3-AAAAA)
Houston County (1-AAAAA)

Best of luck to all the teams.

Somebody drive by the Beckham's and check for a For Sale sign

The BBC is reporting today that AC Milan are hopeful that Becks can push his 2 months out a bit longer.

He played 88 minutes against Roma on the weekend which by anyone’s standards is a more than fair stint in the midfield. If anyone saw his performance please give us your assessment.

The BBC article is quoting Milan’s technical director, the former Brazil wing midfielder Leonardo as saying,
"We thought perhaps he could play for 45 or 60 minutes, but he played the whole match in a very important way…when he finished, he was still very fit - his condition was perfect. The preparation he did during our trip to Dubai earlier this month was very important…it gave him time for conditioning training and we were able to test and assess him. His fitness is very, very good…to play against Roma in his first match was very tough but he ran, fought and defended."

And for my money the most telling quote in the piece was this one, again from Leonardo,
"We have a week before our next match and I think David will be very important for us while he is here."
These are not the word of a Technical Director looking to help a guy out of his loan deal.

Georgia High School AAAAA Preview – Some Background

It’s a gorgeous winter day in Atlanta; perfect for pre-Spring season training and with that, my thoughts are turning to high school soccer in Georgia.

By way of background, for those of you checking in from abroad, the United States uses the same athlete’s promotion system for almost every sport (save gymnastics and tennis where serious talent is typically home-schooled). In other words, kid’s here don’t get recruited in to professional academies, rather they almost always travel up through the same high school to college to professional system.

This system is modeled on the American football promotion system which basically means that players play recreationally at the youth level, they try to make their high school team (in the US those are years 9-12), then rather than go in to professional soccer, they try to make a university team, and finally after university, they will find their way in to the professional ranks.

I’m starting to see more emphasis placed on a player’s club performance as opposed to a player’s high school performance, but the outcome has essentially the same net effect. The goal is recruitment to a university team, rather than a professional academy.

This system is the rule for which there are very few exceptions. But suffice it to say, we don’t have proper football academies so in spite of its inherent flaws, this is still our best means of surfacing international caliber talent.

Manchester United Destroys Chelsea 3-0

Manchester United finished off the match with 2 additional second half goals to put Chelsea away in this much anticipated match at Old Trafford.

Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-Sung were solid in the middle and with substitutes coming in like Michael Carrick, Man Utd. never looked troubled.

Man U goal scorers were Vidic, Rooney, Berbetov.

Edwin van der Sar extends his clean sheet to 9 matches now as United is picking up steam early in this second half of the season.

Manchester United 1 – Chelsea 0 at half time

An injury time header by Vidic has Manchester United up going in to half time.

John Terry found himself diving in front of some driven chances by Park and then a few seconds later, by Fletcher. In fact, it was this last blocked shot which went out for the corner.

Man U took it too quickly and in spite of a Ronaldo finish and much to the initial anguish of Old Trafford, the ref called it back to be done correctly. Not to worry Old Trafford fans, the second effort – this time done correctly – was spot on. A clever flick on by Berbetov found an unmarked Vidic diving in to bounce a rather easy one past Cech.

Spirits are high going in to the half time break, so I’m definitely looking forward to picking this one up again for the second half.

Donovan Strong in Debut with Bayern

After just checking out the video highlights of Landon's performance over at Yanks Abroad Soccer Highlights, I've got to say I'm duly impressed.

Chris has a great summary at Letters from Vagabondia so I won't bother with that here, but I will say the one flaw I saw in the video was Donovan trying to rush the shot at 2 minutes in to the recap. I'm not sure what else he could've done with it, but he has a cracker shot when he connects well.

That being said, his pace and passing looked very good. I think playing alongside Toni, Ribéry, Klose, Schweinsteiger, Lahm, etc. is going to do him an insane amount of good.

Former AJC Soccer Writer has a New Shtick

As a follow up to my earlier “where in the world is Carmen…I mean Wendy Parker?” post, I wanted to let fans of the now retired “Off the Ball” segment know that she has moved on to greener pitches.

Wendy is trying her hand at digital journalism over at Ink-Drained Kvetch. According to Wendy's "about me" segment,
"after 25 years in the newspaper business, I have left it to pursue new opportunities in journalism. As of Sept. 1, 2008, I have accepted a buyout from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where I worked for nearly 19 years, mainly as a sportswriter. For the last four years, I was a producer and editor on the AJC’s website (ajc.com), where I got a chance to reinvent my career."

I caught up with Wendy today via post comment and she mentioned that she may dip back in to some soccer writing in the near future. Until then, enjoy her current stuff.

Gruffgoat's Soccer Forum is now live and ready for your comments.

Courtesy of Proboards, I've finally set up my own discussion forum for all of us soccer fans to use!

In anticipation of Sunday's big match between Chelsea and Manchester United, I'm hoping that folks get a chance to go out have some lively discussions.

My goal is to keep this forum as clutter free as possible, while at the same time limiting the number of trolls and idiots who tend to find their way toward message boards.

Here's hoping!

Cherokee County Board Approves New 50 Acre Soccer Complex

1/08/2008

Cherokee Impact News

According to an article in the Cherokee County tribune writtin by Ashley Fuller, Cherokee County's first soccer complex could be ready by Autumn 2009.

The article says, "The county's Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night approved a bid from F.E. Sims Enterprises for the construction of the complex on Blalock Road in Toonigh.

The county received 11 bids for the project, and F.E. Sims' bid of $2.4 million was the lowest. County Manager Jerry Cooper said work on the project could begin within 30 to 45 days."

The article continues, "County leaders hope to have the complex completed in time to see the fields used for games this fall."

This is great news for soccer in the North Metro Atlanta area.

It goes on to say, "Cooper said the complex would be built on 50 acres on Blalock Road near its intersection with Toonigh Road and north of East Cherokee Drive. The complex will include 17 soccer fields that range in size for under-6 to under-19 teams, 800 parking spaces, two restroom buildings, a concession stand and field house, and administrative building, storm drainage facilities and water and sewer infrastructure to serve the complex."

Well done Cherokee County!

Concorde Fire Showcases Well at Disney

Concorde Fire News

Concorde Fire took their talents to the Disney Showcase and 3 out of the 4 boy's teams ended up with hardware.

The U18 Boy's Concorde Fire Elite, coached by Mark Tonner, were 4th in their Showcase Bracket. They went 2-0-1 in group play, scoring 8 times and allowing 4 goals.

The U15 Boy's Concorde Fire Elite, coached by Adrian Powell, were 3rd in their Showcase Bracket when they beat the Dallas Texans USSF U16 team in the 3rd Place Match.

Finally, the most impressive team of the tournament for Concorde was the U17 Boy's Concorde Fire Elite, coached by Ken Kurilec. They won all three of their group play games by scoring 7 and only allowing 1 goal. In the Final, they were unable to beat the Dallas Texans USSF U18 team by losing 0-1.

Cobb Amateur Soccer League - winter season postponed

Ugh! I was mentally prepared to blow my hamstrings out yet again and lo and behold if the rain gods didn't spare me.

We've had a much needed boat load of rain, so I'm guessing the fields at Lost Mountain Park were fairly drenched.

For any CASL Winter leaguers out there, we're scheduled to resume next week, Saturday, January 17th at a slightly discounted price. Looks like we are looking at a short 6 game season, still not bad for January and February; certainly better than sitting around and getting fat while we wait for the spring portion of the season to roll in!

AJC's Off the Ball is Off the Radar

Resolving to make ‘08 great??? Last year's New Year's resolution?

This, my friends, is the latest post I could find on the Atlanta Journal and Constitution's once steady soccer blog called, “Off the Ball.”

After looking all over AJC.com for about five minutes, I finally found a link to the blog using some archived searches. Atlanta fans, let me know if I've missed something here.

I realize that the men’s Silverbacks team has effectively folded for 2009 (and most likely beyond), but we have so many great local soccer stories that need to be covered; and Wendy Parker was our last main stream media hope!

Wendy, if you’re out there, please let us know what the story is with Off the Ball.

Atlanta area soccer fans, we need to rally here and I’m not a reporter, so please send me your local high school, college, youth, and amateur adult soccer news stories and I’ll post them on Gruffgoat’s Soccer Blog for us all to share and enjoy.

Manchester United v. Chelsea Sunday Morning - Predictions?

I know it's Friday, but if you're like me, when the weekend gets going in to full swing, sometimes these things creep right on past you. Especially for those of us in the States, who will no doubt be inundated with American football ads, it's possible that the world's football may get lost in the information overload. In business we call this phenomena OBE (Overcome By Events).

With that in mind, I offer you this early reminder.

Get your second cup of coffee ready for this one folks...or for the more stout at heart, get your breakfast ales lined up (if you live in Georgia like me, then go ahead by your beer tomorrow...we still can't be trusted to go to church sober on Sundays.)

True fans the world over should be treated to a cracker of a match Sunday morning as Manchester United take on Chelsea at Old Trafford. Kick of is at 11 a.m. Eastern. The game is Fox Soccer Channel.

Feel free to discuss predictions in the comments.

Cobb Amateur Soccer League - winter season to start tomorrow

While most amateur outdoor men’s leagues are on hiatus right now, a couple of weeks ago my current league, Cobb Amateur Soccer League, announced a short, 7-a-side winter outdoor season set to start tomorrow afternoon!

This is only going to be a six or seven match season, but if you’re willing to bundle up on those chilly Saturday afternoons in January and February, then why the heck not?

My only concern is still my hamstring. I’m hoping all of the running and stretching I’ve been doing since Thanksgiving will have strengthened it enough, but as any players out there know, there’s really no true test until you play a match. The combination of running, jogging, jumping, lunging, change of pace and direction, etc. is really unmatched in any other sport.

I’ll know tomorrow for sure (provided we aren’t rained out).

Happy Football New Year! A Gruffgoat Update

What happens when I fervent blogger becomes a fervent player again? The blog posts disappear!

I apologize to my readers for this unacceptably long hiatus on posting to gruffgoat…I’ve had quite a few other projects tying up my free time but it is a new year after all so hopefully now that I’m back in the saddle, I’ll be able to stay in the saddle.

First a bit of local news. As you already know, the men’s Silverbacks team has folded. RIP mighty apes.

Next. My men’s team finished the fall Cobb Amateur Soccer League season with a somewhat disappointing “middle of the table” performance. I managed to blow out both of my hamstrings – old man that I am.

For me, that means that essentially I played 30 minutes every two weeks. Why? Because I’m stubborn, I would heal for two weeks, show up on Sunday night, play for a half hour, pop the hamstring, cry out in anguish, hobble off the field disgusted with myself, heal for two weeks, show up on Sunday night…etc.

But in spite of the pain and my physical set backs (a humbling experience because it’s something I’m frankly not that used to) it did feel great to get on the grass again.
