New England Revolution 1 – Santos Laguna 0: Full Time Report

The first 45 minutes of Group B SuperLiga action in Foxborough showcased choppy football at best and cheap shots at worst. In what may have come to characterize the Mexico – US rivalry, a 41st minute elbow to the face of Nyassi courtesy of Juan Pablo Rodriguez earned the Primera División and occasional Mexican National team star a red card for his trouble. His card reduced Santos to 10 men…but the new formation did little to effect the score for either side as they headed in to the locker room at zero zero for a 15 minute breather.

The second half started a bit more slowly as Santos seemed content to defend against New England’s numerical superiority. Just when we were about to be lulled to sleep, Kheli Dube slotted home in the 70th minute after a great Nyassi run ripped through the Santos defense and opened up a lane to cut a pass back across the face of the goal. Dube found space in the traffic and opened the game up a bit for the final 20 minutes.

Dube’s goal proved enough to deliver the victory for New England and the final score was the Revs 1 and Santos Laguna 0.
